Johnson loves speed and is building the fastest steam train in Borrowdale in 1850. But his ex-wife, Kate Angel, is building a school just around the bend of the track for all of the poor children. His need for speed and her need for stability lead to tragedy, and as she dies in a terrible train wreck, he learns that “Life in the slow lane” can be just as fulfilling.
